Teaching Beliefs
Education is a journey of discovery for the teacher and the student – both are learners on a great adventure. An educator should strive to inspire a lifelong love of learning and prepare students to meet the challenges of life with confidence in their abilities, skills, and knowledge. Learners should delve beneath the surface of subject areas to find treasures that interest them on a personal level. They should actively experience and benefit from the school-based journey through problem solving, history, cooperation, language, motivation, science, responsibility, the arts, individuality, math, and society. The classroom should be a hub of interactivity. Students should actively engage in publishing, debating, creating, presenting, and analyzing. The classroom should also be a safe haven for reflection, introspection, and personal expression. It should be a place where students feel comfortable taking chances and making mistakes in order to grow. It should be a place of inquiry, curiosity, and challenge. Students should discover the connections between their own lives and school subjects, identify the significance of concepts across the curriculum and in everyday life, and create work in which they feel pride.
Teachers should be lifelong learners – enriching their daily lives with new literature, concepts, efforts, and applications. They should be creators, readers, speakers, and especially, listeners. Teachers should be flexible – willing to work with students on an individual level and create differentiated learning experiences. The field of education is in constant advancement, and teachers should enthusiastically pursue new opportunities to enrich students’ learning experiences. Teachers should embrace technology as a tool for student expression, information gathering, and presentation. Technology may also be used a method for nurturing a connection between school and the home. Teachers, students, parents, and the community should be committed to creating and maintaining a safe and challenging learning environment for all.
