    The Senior Program

    Welcome to Erie 1 BOCES Early Childhood Education II. This is the second course of a two year program that will allow you to gain practical experience in the Early Childhood Field. The Early Childhood concepts learned in the first year will be expanded upon and you will have opportunities to observe and practice techniques and strategies learned in class. The students will use their skills and knowledge learned at Harkness Career Center to manage and operate a preschool class and at a selected internship site.

    Textbook: Working with Young Children by Judy Herr

    Course Objectives:

    · To prepare for an entry level position in the field of Early Childhood

    · To explore career possibilities in the area of Early Childhood Education

    · To expand on the basic understanding of the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development of young children

    · To gain experience in the establishment and maintenance of a safe, healthy learning environment for children

    · To use the skills and knowledge of Early Childhood Education in a practical setting

    · To gain a basic understanding of the role and responsibilities of a classroom teacher

    Experience with Young Children:

    Preschool:
          On a rotating basis, students will organize and operate all
          aspects of The Harkness Preschool, a 3 day a week program for
          3 -5 year olds operating October through May.
    Interns:
         When not teaching or planning for Preschool, each student will
         complete an Internship - This can be in a preschool, Daycare or
         elementary school classroom. This will total 60 hours.
