• Augmentative Alternative Communication

"AAC" stands for augmentative and alternative communication.  It indicates methods of communication that supplement (augmentative) or provide alternate (alternative) means of communication for children with extremely limited or no verbal speech.  AAC can be any device, system or method that improves a child's ability to effectively communicate.  AAC includes techniques or aids such as sign language, gesturing, picture boards and/or facial expression, as well as electronic devices that have "speech output" (ie. programmed to "talk").  The overall objective of AAC, as part of a comprehensive therapy program, is to develop functional communication and also to provide the foundation for language and literacy development.
