    HALLOWEEN HOUSE (A Cut-and-Tell Story)

Author Unknown (For this story, a large sheet of orange construction paper and a pointed pair of scissors are needed.)

Hugo, the bear, and his friend, Bitsy, the mouse, wanted to give a

Halloween party for all of the forest animals, but they didn't have a house,

just a small den and a hole in the ground.

They thought about the fun they'd all have wearing scary costumes and

telling scary stories. Hugo wanted to make honey cookies, and Bitsy knew

how to make a delicious mouse candy from maple sugar and pine nuts.

But, alas, they had no house.

One day while walking through the forest together, Hugo found a large

piece of orange paper. Running as fast as he could, carrying the paper in

one hand and Bitsy in the other, Hugo went straight to his den. "Watch

this," he said, putting Bitsy down. Hugo folded the paper and cut a round

house shape with a big door. (Fold the large sheet in half using the longest

side. Cut a large half-oval shape starting on the folded edge. Then cut a

smaller oval-shaped door a little way in from the half-oval's left side.)

"You need a window," said Bitsy. So, Hugo cut a window.

(Cut a triangular window shape on the right of the small oval door shape

[and higher up] by puncturing and cutting the paper through both

thicknesses. The point of the triangle faces toward the right side of the

    paper.)

"But, I need a small door, too," Bitsy said. Hugo cut a small door.

(Cut another small oval door shape to the right of the large door.)

"Now we can invite all our friends to a Halloween party, whoopee!" said

    Hugo.

"Wait a minute. Just wait a minute," said Bitsy. "We need a jack-o-lantern!"

"We already have one!" Hugo said.(Unfold the house.)

(Note: Practice on a 9 × 11 piece of scrap paper before you tell the story to

    get the cut areas correct.)
