CAREER EDUCATION INTERNSHIP
Internships provide an effective way for students to prepare for an employment field to receive on-the-job experience in an occupation. Internships are designed to provide this opportunity for students to put skills to practical application at a job site. This establishes work experiences to make the transition for school to work, and gives the student the opportunity to practice what they are learning in their program area.
The Career Education Program helps to develop career competency, initiative, ability to work with others, and appropriate attitudes and behaviors for the chosen occupation. This proves advantages to the student, schools, employers, and the community, as a whole, as we work together to meet workplace needs.
BENEFITS OF THE INTERNSHIP
Internships offer many benefits for students, schools and employers.Students
Internships offer students the opportunity to develop needed work skills while participating in the world of work. Students gain practical skills in their chosen career area and have an opportunity to learn work terminology, work climate, and business/industry protocol. Most important, they have a chance to decide if the career area is really appropriate for them.
Schools
Internships enable schools to offer students a more intense study of a career area. In addition, schools can document and assess a student’s level of skill in a performance-based manner before program completion.
Employers
Internships offer employers the opportunity to work with schools and get real tasks accomplished with student/employees who already have some skills and knowledge and help influence students in career choices and work attitude.
At Erie 1 BOCES Career Centers, internships are three weeks or a total of 30 hours, non-paid and are scheduled in time where students will attend the internship site instead of their normally scheduled BOCES program. Students must meet the required internship criteria and provide their own transportation to and from the internship site.
JOB PLACEMENT
Matching the right employee to the appropriate job openings is important both for the worker and the employer. A Work-Based Learning Teacher serves as a liaison between employers and the Career and Technical Education Centers to insure this match.
The Work-Based Learning Teacher works regularly with local employers to develop a job bank for all program areas. These job orders are forwarded to teachers who notify qualified students of the opportunities available. The Work-Based Learning Teacher provides assistance in preparing students with necessary job-seeking skills. Part-time, full-time, and Work-Based Learning Programs are provided to help students better meet their career goals.
